The Colosseum - The Colosseum is one of the wonders of the world. The elliptical bowl has a capacity of 50,000 seats. From A.D. 80, it has seen many bloody combats between gladiators and wild beasts. This is certainly a must see.
Protestant Cemetery - This cemetery holds the remains of many famous and eminent writers and poets. Some of the names include the romantic poet John Keats whose epitaph -- "Here lies one whose name was writ in water" is engraved on the tomb. Other occupants of this old cemetery include ashes of Percy Bysshe Shelley, author of "Prometheus Unbound".
Golden House of Nero - After the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD, the Roman Emperor Nero used the space where many buildings had burned down to build himself a new palace. So, in the middle of downtown Rome, he built a palace, which he called the "Golden House". The Golden House was once very luxurious. In front of the Golden House, Nero put an enormous statue of himself, covered with gold.
The Pantheon - The Pantheon was built in 27 B.C. and it was rebuilt in second century A.D. It is the only ancient Roman building which is still intact. The pantheon means "All the Gods". This is a perfect square resting in a cylinder which measures 142 feet wide and 142 feet high.
Trevi Fountain - Trevi Fountain, on a piazza of Via del Tritone, features mythical sea creatures and cascading waters. Legend dictates that you can ensure return to Rome by tossing a coin into the fountain. You will surely toss a coin!
St. Peter's Basilica - This is the most visited shrine in the whole world. St. Peter's is located in Vatican City, across the river Tiber, west of Rome's center. Vatican City is completely surrounded by the city of Rome.
Vatican Museums - These museums are known to hold treasures from antiquity and the Renaissance, which are held within lavish palaces, apartments and galleries leading to the renowned Sistine Chapel.
Assisi - This is the mystic town of Saint Francis. This city is still surrounded by ancient walls. Visit the astounding Basilica of Saint Francis with its early Renaissance masterpieces by Giotto and Cimabue. The entire town centre is enclosed within the city walls, a sign and guarantee of safety. These walls have witnessed various events. The perimeter of the walls covers about five kilometres. The eight city gates (San Giacomo, Perlici, Moiano, San Francesco, Nuova, San Pietro, Cappuccini and Sementone) complete the city layout and make it look like an ancient place. Assisi is known as the city of Peace and the meeting place of world religions. Assisi is also known as the green heart of the Umbria region. Assisi shows a fine example of Italian art and architecture. It is also home of St. Francis, one of the Italy's most loved saints.
